| Do Quests require a certain religious background? |
|
In short, no. The Crossing is committed to the Christian teachings of tolerance and a celebration of diversity, and a radical hospitality where “all are welcome”. Our ministry is rooted in several denominational traditions, including United Methodist, American Baptist, Presbyterian, and the United Church of Christ. We celebrate those foundations and their continued support, while reaching out to people of all backgrounds and faiths in our programming. Many students who go on Quests identify as Christians (spanning the Catholic/Protestant spectrum), but others have no religious affiliation or are Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, or Unitarian. We believe the best spiritual conversations happen among people with different backgrounds and at different points in their life journey, and Quests provide that opportunity. Quests are designed to celebrate the wide range of religious expressions and experiences. They are equally respectful of those who do not consider themselves "religious." We do often use religious traditions and teachings as foundations for our conversations in preparation for and during Quests because we believe that they contain wisdom about how to live a full and good life, but it’s important to us that no one feels excluded or out of place at any time. Quest students are encouraged to be introspective about their own faith and openly ask questions about all faith traditions and philosophies. We hope that Quest helps each participant move along their own spiritual path, and see questions as a sign of deep thinking and humility. |
